International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2021

On 23 December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly decided, in its resolution 49/214, that the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People shall be observed on 9 August every year. The date marks the first meeting, in 1982, of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations.

The International Day observance will take place online on Monday, 9 August 2021 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am Eastern Standard Time (EST).

This year’s theme is is Leaving No One Behind: Indigenous peoples and the call for a new social contract.

The 2021 commemoration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples will feature an interactive discussion with two speakers on the distinct elements to be considered when building and redesigning a new social contract that is inclusive of indigenous peoples – where indigenous peoples’ own forms of governance and ways of life must be respected and based on their free, prior and informed consent and genuine and inclusive participation and partnership.
